Supervision and Management

This course covers the issues that impact new or inexperienced supervisors and managers. We will track the process of creating, developing, and monitoring work team effectiveness and, using examples from both manufacturing and service industries, explore business trends, examine key organizational processes, and consider the role of the supervisor/manager. Participants are asked to use assessments and feedback from others to create a personal learning plan and there will be opportunities to develop, practice, and apply solutions to real, work-based issues. 16 hours (Textbook required)

Played by managers and supervisors in today’s business world, the students will be able to:

  • Clearly and efficiently communicate with customers and work groups to achieve business objectives;
  • Provide useful feedback;
  • Build high performing teams;
  • Focus coaching discussions on information appropriate to the task, employee and environment;
  • Use process skills to ensure a clear understanding of a discussion and keep it moving forward;
  • Development and deliver a presentation that follows guidelines for visual, verbal and vocal behavior;
  • Analyze their work, identify chronic problems, and create solutions;
  • Create action plans to meet business goals and objectives;
  • Understand parameters by which interviews are conducted; and
  • Address training needs within their group
Course Outline:

Week 1:
An overview of the role transition of the employee into supervision/management and the skills and competencies needed for each of their four critical roles.

Week 2 – Communication:
The basic elements of effective communication, barriers to communication, ways to deliver a message and the importance of good listening skills. Using effective feedback.

Week 3 – Motivation:
What it is; how to motivate; involving the employee in how to do the job; increasing productivity through motivation.

Week 4 - Team Work:
Understanding the difference between teams and work groups; the four stages of team development; how different personalities of team members and enhance the teams performance. Coaching: Coaching through the learning cycle; managing conflicts.

Week 5 – Effective Meetings:
Pre-meeting preparation, agenda building, meeting roles and responsibilities, ground rules, tools to use for effective meetings, post-meeting feedback. Oral Presentation: Tips for speaking, dealing with your pet peeves, avoiding being trapped by rambling questions.

Week 6 – Problem Solving:
A problem solving process, tools to use for identifying problems, root cause analysis, solution selection and implementation.

Week 7 – Planning, Organizing, Directing and Controlling:
Time management skills, right person/right job, determining standards, taking remedial action, rules for successful discipline. Corporate planning: vision, mission, values, characteristics and business needs.

Week 8 – Interviewing Skills:
Purpose of the interview - new hires, counseling, appraisal, discipline, exit. Training: Preparation, classroom set-up, on-the-job, follow-up, developing future supervisions.
