Italian - Advanced Conversation and Culture

This course is designed for students who have achieved high levels of conversational skill and understanding of the Italian language. You will not only read books by well-known Italian authors, but you will also view videos and movies without subtitles. Conversations utilizing grammar, including verbs, will ensue. A prerequisite of level V or above allows students to be accepted into this course. 16 hours (Classroom materials are provided.)

Learning Objectives:

Be able to speak and understand fast spoken Italian
Use the proper forms of verbs in all their tenses
Read Italian Books from the Easy Readers Publications Level C and D
Watch Italian Movies without any subtitles

Course Outline:

Week 1: Review topics covered in Italian VIII
Divide in groups for conversation
Assignment: Read the story provided by the instructor

Week 2: Review the Present and Past Subjunctive Tense
Conversation
Distribute the copy of the book: Marcovaldo by Italo Calvino
Talk about Italo Calvino

Week 3: Review the prepositions DI, A, DA
Oral report from the first half of the book: Marcovaldo
Video: The story of Michelangelo

Week 4: Review the Imperfect and Pluperfect Subjunctive
Exercises with all the Subjunctive tenses
Video: The story of Michelangelo
Talk about the video
Assignment: More reading from the Book: Marcovaldo

Week 5: Talk about the part of the book Marcovaldo read this week
Choose an article from an Italian magazine, read it and talk about it in class
Video: The story of Michelangelo
Assignment: Finish reading the book: Marcovaldo

Week 6: Read more contemporary stories
Talk about these stories and how they represent the Italian culture
Video: The story of Michelangelo
Assignment: Talk about another Italian artist

Week 7: Listen to a tape of Italian native speakers
Report in summary what was heard
Review the prepositions IN, CON, SU
Do exercises with the above prepositions

Week 8: Read a story provided by the instructor
Finish the video: The story of Michelangelo
Review the video and talk about the
favorite art city in Italy.
