Learning Objectives:

Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (personal information, shopping, local geography, employment).
Describe in simple terms aspects of personal background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
Deal with most situations likely to arise while traveling in an area where the language is spoken.
Produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.

Course Outline:

WEEK 1: Getting started
Socializing: Introducing and talking about yourself (presentación personal), getting on with people, exchanging personal information; talking about hobbies, abilities, likes and dislikes, giving opinions.
Course objectives and expectations
Learning how to learn Spanish
Basic review
** Project: Thinking about and planning a final class project

WEEK 2: Traveling and touring
Doing things with words: Planning a vacation, arriving in a country, touring; getting and giving directions, using a map and public transportation.
Structure: Future with “ir”, imperatives, orthographical changing verbs, prepositions, adjetivos demostrativos. “Podría por favor”, “Hay..”.
Vocabulary and environment: Countries, world geography, places in a city, transportation.

WEEK 3: Setting into accommodation and eating out
Doing things with words: Hotel =Making reservations, filling out forms, setting into accommodation, paying, following instructions. Restaurant = ordering a meal, expressing likes and dislikes, agreeing and disagreeing.
Structure: Presente del indicativo. Tambien, tampoco, podría, puede, quisiera, gustar
Vocabulary and environment: Hotel, restaurants, food, market place, numerical expressions
** Project: designing and working on a final class project

WEEK 4: Shopping
Doing things with words: Shopping = talking about prices; buying and selling things, making comparisons; using financial and postal services.
Structure: Adjetivos demostrativos (este, esto, esta, estos; ese, esa, esos, aquello(a) aquellos [llas]); “¿Cuánto cuesta eso?, comparisons (más que), ser/estar, adjectives (costoso/caro, económico/barato), “gustar”.
Vocabulary and environment: Numbers, numerical expressions, places in a city ; clothes, appliances, general goods.
Basic Review

WEEK 5: Emergencies
Doing things with words: Dealing with emergency situations = making requests, complaining, reporting, asking for and giving information; describing situations, objects, places and people. Asking for and giving advice and recommendations.
Structure: Irregular verbs in the conditional form “condicional”; “pretérito imperfecto y pretérito perfecto simple”.
Vocabulary and environment: places in a city, crime, public safety.

WEEK 6: Working I
Doing things with words: Looking and applying for a job, introducing and describing yourself, having an interview and interviewing. Requesting and providing work related services. Making outgoing calls and receiving incoming calls, taking messages and writing notes.
Structure: Presente, pretérito y futuro del indicativo
Vocabulary and environment: Cover letters, resumes, job and occupations, workplaces (office, factory, hospital, hotel,etc.)

WEEK 7: Working II
Doing things with words: Understanding and writing reports and correspondence (letters, memos, e-mail, etc.). Understanding and writing reports. Participating in meetings and seminars, following and giving a presentation or demonstration.
Structure: Presente, pretérito y futuro del indicativo
Vocabulary and environment: Letters, memos, e-mails, reports, job and occupations, work places, disciplines (science, health, business, art, engineering, etc.)

WEEK 8:
** Project: Presentations of class projects
Final review
